Protect the documents first
Before anyone fills a donation box or trash bag, gather identification, wills, deeds, tax records, financial statements, keys, photographs, jewelry, and small valuables. Use one locked room or clearly marked container for items that need family review.
Give people a decision deadline
Endless “maybe” piles make a cleanout harder. Set a date for relatives to choose keepsakes and a clear method for claiming them. Photograph larger pieces so decisions can happen without everyone standing in the same room.
Sort by destination
Use four groups: keep, family pickup, donate or sell, and remove. Do not spend hours deciding the resale value of every ordinary object. Save that effort for pieces with real financial or family importance.
Work one zone at a time
Finish a room before spreading into the next one. Closets, basements, garages, and sheds often take longer than their size suggests, so leave room in the schedule.
Bring in a crew for the heavy phase
Once the decisions are made, a hauling crew can move furniture, appliances, bagged clutter, and mixed household items much faster than a family working around truck capacity and disposal trips.
