Donate what another person can use now
Working appliances, clean furniture, unbroken housewares, usable tools, and boxed clothing may be worth donating. Donation centers have their own condition rules and capacity limits, so check before loading a vehicle.
Recycle material with a real outlet
Metal, cardboard, some electronics, and certain appliances often have dedicated recycling routes. “Recyclable” does not mean every local facility accepts it. Match the item to an available program.
Haul broken, contaminated, or mixed material
Furniture with structural damage, water exposure, heavy odors, pests, or missing parts may not be suitable for donation. Mixed cleanout material is also easier to manage when one crew can sort what is practical and remove the rest.
Do not let perfect sorting stop the cleanup
Set a time limit. Save clearly useful items, separate obvious recyclables, and ask for help with the bulky remainder. A finished room is more useful than six half-sorted piles.
Ask before hiding a difficult item
Chemicals, liquids, propane, fuel, medical waste, and other restricted material need the correct facility. Keep them visible and discuss them before pickup.
